What happened so far
SafeNet Borderless Security PK Client is a program developed by SafeNet. The most used version is 7.0.8, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. Upon installation and setup, it defines an auto-start registry entry which makes this program run on each Windows boot for all user logins.
- FineReader Engine has successfully supported the hardware protection with SafeNet’s USB dongles iKey 1000 and iKey 1032 since 2004.
- Due to licensing protection technology changes SafeNet (previously Rainbow Technologies) has stopped the further development of the technology used by iKey.
- SafeNet doesn't provide any significant updates for iKey driver since several years.
- The latest Microsoft operating systems are not supported properly by the iKey dongles and its driver, especially the lack of proper, reliable 64-bit support is a pain for ABBYY developers and customers.
- Requirements for dongle as a hardware has also changed. The capacity of iKey 1000 is only 8 KB and of the iKey 1032 – 32 KB. It does not match the needs of our customers today.
- In the medium term of period the support of the iKey dongles by Safenet will probably reach the end-of-life.
Ending Support of iKey Dongles
- ABBYY is still able to ship and replace iKey dongles for customers who deploy their applications with this type of hardware protection for a certain time (at least until end of 2015).
The alternative
- ABBYY started to support a new, more comprehensive hardware protection technology Wibu-Systems CodeMeter®
